Carbon Bootcamp: Join Now And Shrink YOUR Carbon Footprint

Carbon Bootcamp is a simple, easy, fun, engaging, educational way to lower your carbon footprint. And, for the first 300 participants in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and 94040 and 94041 in Mountain View it’s free!  All you do to join is text “CARBON” to 474747• and follow the instructions.

The six-week Carbon Bootcamp consists of three modules:

  • Home energy use
  • Transportation
  • Food

Each of these has a meaningful impact on a person’s carbon footprint.   At the start of each module, you pick up a box filled with gear, information, instructions and challenges for you to tackle.   Then you’re guided through a text messaging platform and engage by texting code words for low carbon choices you’ve made on a given day or by sending photos of challenges fulfilled. Choose from four start dates, staggered to accommodate busy summer schedules:

  • June 15
  • July 13
  • Aug 10
  • Sept 7

Carbon Bootcamp co-creator, Anna Michalak, says, We’ve picked the simplest, easiest, and most impactful choices that people can make each day to limit their carbon footprint and therefore impact climate change, and bundled them into an experience that users can engage with on their own time, at their own pace.”  Michalak is a climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science and Stanford University, and a Los Altos resident. She and Zaven Arra, developed the program by combining expertise in climate science with a light touch interactive approach.

Earlier this year, they ran a beta test of Carbon Bootcamp with 100 people from around the Bay Area. “The enthusiasm of our beta participants blew us away,” says Arra, “and really demonstrated that our idea could work at the larger scale than we were imagining!”

The beta test taught Michalak and Arra that people are looking for ways to contribute but are overwhelmed by information coming from too many sources. Anna notes, “There’s value in cutting through the noise. When you make it easy and fun to make impactful choices and reinforce them in real time, good habits really stick!”  According to Jen Hsia, a busy physician from Los Altos Hills who participated in the beta test, “The time commitment was very manageable. If I can find the time, anyone can!”

GreenTown Board member, Cheryl Weiden, was part of the beta test. Although initially skeptical, ultimately, Weiden became Carbon Bootcamp’s greatest evangelist. “The program is just so much fun!” says Weiden. Looking forward to seeing how our participants fare in shrinking their collective carbon footprint. Got questions? Check out the FAQs here.
